Janina Ede - Introduction
Janina Ede (1937-2018) was a prolific illustrator of both adult's and children's books. Notable examples include Gwynned Rae's 'Mary Plain' books, Helen Cresswell's 'A Gift from Winklesea' and the first English editions of many works by Colette.

I have recently acquired a selection of her artworks. These are original sketches, try-outs ('roughs') and alternative versions of illustrations for published books from the 1950s onwards, including quite a few by Colette, as well as Chekhov, Thackeray, R.L. Stevenson, Monica Dickens and others. As far as I am aware the artworks have not been seen in public before. I will be uploading scans of many of them onto this blog, accompanied by brief commentary.

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI am Janine's second cousin. I don't think I can contribute anything to the history of her illustrations but I am very interested into what you intend to do with your collection and would be grateful if you would respond.
Many thanks,
Julie Bransden
Hi Julie - nice to hear from you and many thanks for giving me my first comment!
ReplyDeleteAt the moment my main concern is just with scanning and documenting these pieces on here. It's taking a bit longer than I imagined, and I've also been acquiring a few more pieces as I go along. In addition to this I've been having some problems with visibility of this site (it doesn't turn up in Google searches at the moment), so I need to sort that out.
I don't currently have definite long term plans for the collection. If you have any ideas feel free to email me!
All the best,
Paul
(Apologies for edits of this comment)
Back in the mid 80s, when I was a little boy, I was absolutely mad about bats. My Mum, Eleanor Allen, is a children’s author and wrote a book inspired by my passion called “Max and the Birthday Bat” which was illustrated by Janina Ede. I’d be interested to know if you have any of the original artwork from that. The full colour cover was particularly good.

Hi Max, sorry for the slow reply - I've been away from this blog for a while. No I don't have any artwork from 'Max and the Birthday Bat' unfortunately, but thanks for drawing my attention to it and for the information. I'll add it to the bibliography section. I'll let you know if I do come across any of the artwork. All the best, Paul
DeleteHello Paul, I have all the original artwork. Please contact me via the blog author.
DeleteHi again Max - as you can see from the previous post, the artwork for 'Max and the Birthday Bat' is in fact available! If you email me at illustrationart1965@gmail.com I will forward that person's email address to you so you can contact them to discuss.
